Mudo e Surdo, Dumb and Deaf – by Paus

Check out this video by the Portuguese band Paus. The title translates as “dumb and deaf.” Who is “mute” (mudo) and who is “deaf”? To what or whom are they deaf and dumb? Some ideas: the video could be seen as a commentary on tradition vs. modernity (the old way vs [or and?] the new), white vs./and blacks, “natives” vs./and immigrants or children of immigrants. Maybe the “and” is better in all of these juxtapositions, since arguably both groups of people seen in the video are deaf and dumb.
