Vik Muniz and VHILS

Vik Muniz and VHILS are two artists whose work I think can be compared. Muniz’s work is features in the documentary Waste Land (a summary of the film is available here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gInKde8FmH4).

Brazilian native Muniz found beauty in a Brazilian garbage dump, infamous for its size, among the people who worked there — the catadores, or pickers, who went through it looking for recyclables. Using the garbage itself, he created works of art. VHILS, from Portugal, does something similar with his art, taking something old and abandoned, the old walls of partly demolished buildings, and digging into them to create portraits. A video report on VHILS and his art is available here: https://www.theatlantic.com/e42e04aa-42d3-43ca-9e51-7e77a3625ff1
